My sister is getting much weaker now. At what point should we seek Hospice assistance. She was diagnosed 2 years ago, uses a bipap, but has chosen not to get a feeding tube. Her doctors told us in June that she may have 6 months left, but everyone is different. If she gets Hospice, can she change her mind about feeding tube? a ventilator? How are other PALS's experiences with Hospice. Just what can they add to her care and well being. Thanks for your help. Mary

Her Dr. will have to refer her to Hospice and what they do is provide support for her and the family. Hospice's primary objective is that your sister be safe and happy, and that the family have support in every way possible. They may reccommend the feeding tube but they won't make her do anything. They have a lot of respect for the patient's wishes and usually they stress that to the families. Ask her Dr. to refer you and they will have a social worker contact you. You can accept or decline any services that they offer, and pick and choose what is needed for your family. They will order medications and all supplies, which can be a huge help when you're busy with life.
