I know the verdict is still out on whether physical therapy is helpful or not. I've just started and am sticking to range of motion and resistance. Any thoughts or personal experiences?

resistance exercises is not recommended for ALS patients.

official study is now underway to determine what works best. the jury is still out. i still work out at gym, minimum weight. i peaked out in weight training feb/2010 when i was diagnosed. then listening to my body have slowly backed off. 10 lbs upper body, 30-50- lbs lower body. if you have never done weight training DON'T TRY IT

Suggest you read the recent thread "Heaviness".

Were you told this by a doctor?

If that question was intended for me, yes my neuro/ALS specialist and physical therapist told me no weights and minimal exercise. ROM and short walks are ok as long as your legs will allow you to walk safely with no leg dragging.

When I tap on the heaviness thread, I don't get anything. What am I doing wrong?

I don't know. I just tried it and it worked fine. It's very recent and had the same question about PT and resistance exercise.
