These terms are medical based and will be helpful for those patients and family members that are reading medical journals, pamphlets and materials made available by doctors and others.

Medical Terms and Definitions

lithium

Lithium is a chemical element with the symbol Li. It is a soft alkali metal with a silver-white colour. Under standard conditions, it is the lightest metal and the least dense solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive, corroding quickly in moist air to form a black tarnish. For this reason, lithium metal is typically stored under the cover of oil.

Theanine

Theanine is a compund found in tea and can be extracted from tea leaves. Theanine is often sold as a dietary supplement in the United States. Able to cross the blood-brain barrier, theanine has psychoactive properties and has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress. Theanine improves mental capacity and mood when taken with caffeine.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil scams have been around for quite some time. There is no scientific proof, trials, or evidence that coconut oil helps slow the progression, or stop the progression of ALS.

Gilenya

Gilenya is the trade name for a drug called Fingolimod. Gilenya is an immunomodulating drug that has been approved as a treatment for multiple sclerosis. Gilenya helps reduce relapse rates of multiple sclerosis by over 50%, but unfortunately, has serious adverse effects. It has also recently been discovered to have possible therapeutic advantages towards heart failure and arrhythmias.

Fingolimod

Fingolimod is an immunomodulating drug with the trade name Gilenya. Fingolimod has been approved as a treatment for multiple sclerosis because of it's success reducing the relapse rates of multiple sclerosis by over 50%.

Riluzole

Riluzole (generic name) is drug therapy used to treat ALS. Riluzole is designed to be taken by mouth as directed, usually every 12 hours, at the same times each day, and is best taken on an empty stomach (one hour before a meal, or two hours after a meal). Despite what is often read online, there is no increased benefit from higher doses. Higher doses do increase the risk of side effects.

Modafinil

Modafinil is a medication that is taken orally. The brand name for Modafinil is Provigil. Modafinil is used to improve wakefulness in patients with excessive sleepiness. The medication has a similar effect as caffeine; it will stimulate the brain and make a tired individual feel more awake and rested. Modafinil (Provigil) is classified as a stimulant.

Hyoscyamine

Hyoscyamine is used to treat a variety of stomach and intestinal tract disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, colitis, peptic ulcers, diarrhea, or pancreatitis. Hyoscyamine can be used to control bed wetting and urination, or to prevent motion sickness, treat Parkinson's disease, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and poisonings from certain insecticides and plants.
