Afraid to die (Poem)

Afraid to die
I’m frightened to sleep, in case I choke
As also when I eat and this is no joke
Even drinking a drink, a cup of coffee or tea
Goes down the wrong way believe you me
Leaves you afraid, fighting for your breath
Wondering is this it, is this your death
There is no cure for what brings this on
Nothing at all, there is truly none
So do I sit up at night afraid to sleep
Trying to fight and trying not to weep
Do I not eat, maybe just starve to death
Whichever I choose will take my breath
There is no cure for motor neurone disease
After 130 years there is nothing to appease
People don’t give a damn if you maybe cry
To them it’s just a job, even if you die
We take for granted that we eat and drink
Also that we sleep, we never once think
Your mouth changes shape, as to your throat
Stops you talking and swallowing as I quote
Fills your throat full of saliva when asleep
It’s a nasty disease one you won’t want to keep
When you wake in a morning you want it out
Amid gasping for your breath, there is no doubt
It can’t be caught and it’s luckily for us all
Or all of mankind would certainly rapidly fall
Just be grateful that it does not visit you
Or any single member of your family too
