I finally started PT this week. The first session was basically measuring what use I still had in my legs and we worked on some new exercises. I went home stiff and sore, but felt like I really accomplished something. I also felt that now I had a tool to watch the progression and also to use the muscles not affected yet to their potention. My husband took the exercise sheets and put them in plastic sheets and started a notebook for me. When I do my exercises, once a day working up to twice a day. He can watch if I am doing them right and telling me which one I need to do next. I hated stopping after each one and having to look at what I haven't done yet. Selective memory. And today I went back for my second session. One thing I learned was that I have a drag on my right foot and we are getting a insert brace for it and that even though I have lost a long of arm muscles, I CAN use a walker to keep balance and it was great. so now we are waiting for that order to be approved. Following my PT I had my first OT session. Again the basic measuring only this time on my arms and hands. It appearing my main problem is my actual shoulders with the rest of the arms trying to catch up. We discussed many problems and solutions and different innovative ways to keep on trucking. Next week we are going through a catalog to find helpful items to assist me in care and grooming. While I was waiting for my first session, I found all the handbooks that MDA had sent me in my initial package. I felt a lot more comfortable there.
I also registered with the ALS regional office in St Louis, MO. They are referring me to a social worker and are sending information on grants to help with housekeeping and personal aides costs since I am not eligible for any other programs. and everything is my insurance doesn't cover is out of pocket. They get you coming and going don't they
Well, back to both therapies next week and for as long as I can. It makes me feel better not sitting a home doing little or nothing. YES
