Dysphagia or Trouble Swallowing Therapy

Vitalstim can be an effective treatment to help people suffering from difficulty swallowing (Dysphagia). Vitalstim is offered at a number of hospitals in the UK, North America and abroad.

Vitalstim (www.vitalstimtherapy.com) uses electrodes and a mild electrical current to stimulate the swallowing muscles, both strengthening the swallowing reflex and making the reflex faster.

The Vitalstim procedure involves a set of electrodes attached to the patients throat during eating (topical to the swallowing muscles); the electrodes stimulate the swallowing muscles to strengthen the swalling reflex.

Dysphagia affects patients with ALS as their disease progresses and Vitalstim may be an effective therapy to combat this problem.
