Rose, I agree entirely that each person has their path to follow and their story to tell; what is, perhaps, sometimes overlooked is that what science actually does is something rather different in that it seeks to discount the anecdotal evidence altogether and start from first principles.

It's actually quite difficult to explain to people without a science background why anecdotal evidence is at the very bottom of the list ranking 'evidence'. I am much more at my ease reading scientific papers than I am trying to explain probability theory to peoplw with very little maths; it is the sort of thing which so obvious to me that I cannot see why it is not entirely obvious to them. But then I acknowledge that the obvious answer is the right one: they have very little maths.

But science is what is needed since science is the only hope of getting treatment which may slow progression and perhaps some day a cure...
