Hi
I have read the introduction to this thread about twitching not being first sign of ALS.
How ever I have twitching that is accompanied by pain and tightness in hamstrings. It's not extreme pain and tightness where I cannot walk but just irritating tight feeling in the hamstring.
Do I need to be worried about this? Recently I had a cousin diagnosed with ALS. But she is 60 and there are no other known family members with ALS.
My twitching is irritating. Calves, thighs. Biceps, forearm, little bit on face - doesn't seem like very specific.
I'm very worried. Primary physician asked me to see Neuro which further scared me.

Nup, twitching means nothing and pain and tightness are sensory issues, so ALS is probably not the reason for your doctors referral. Sorry about your cousin, don't let it worry you, go start supporting your cousin instead.

All the best

Thanks Tillie. I really appreciate your time and quick response. I hope it's nothing serious.
I'm praying my cousin's condition does not progress quickly..

Hi I'm sorry for asking another question but I'm feeling very anxious. I started reading some of the ALS diagnosis and early symtom stories on the ALS organization and it has me very worried. Seems like a few that have had a positive als diagnosis say they have fasiculations as the first thing they noticed. Is it possible to develop weakness later after fasiculations. My neuro told me he didn't see indication of weakness or atrophy.
My problem is I still continue to have twitching more focussed on legs it's seems like. Especially the thigh and not sure why I feel this continuos soreness tightness in hamstrings. Sometimes I feel like the spiders crawling thing on my calves or top of the foot. I feel like I tremble sometimes at night. Maybe I need to take something for anxiety :(. Please help me

I see no reason for you to be concerned about ALS. Twitching, fasciculations, and creepy crawling sensations are common to many health conditions, and are usually indicative of nothing at all. Pain or no pain.

You're leaping from very common symptoms to a very rare disease. Doesn't make sense.

The hallmark of ALS is paralysis: a muscle that is limp and useless. You don't have it.

If a neurologist found no weakness, you have no reason to be concerned.

Those stories have been discussed here before. If I remember correctly the one most often asked about was actually a case of rare respriatory onset that was not diagnosed. He had respiratory issues then had twitching. There is another report maybe also on an ALSA site where someone talks only about twitches yet it is clear from the rest of the story that there were abnormalities on the first clinical exam.

But anyway twitching is nonspecific crawling sensation sounds like something else as does tremor and soreness.
And one cousin with ALS does not mean you are a FALS family. Please do not worry the neuro cleared you. . Read the sticky agsin for Dr Hardiman's comments on twitches. And thank you for staying in one thread as we ask in the sticky

Thank you both Nikki and Astugi for your kind replies and I apologize for my behavior.
I'm trying to not pay attention but each time it happens it panics me.
Here is a summary of all I feel
1) twitches in left back of thigh (on and off that last few seconds)
2) on and off twitches in thigh front both
3) random twitches in shoulder or forearm or odd one in bicep
4) I felt a couple in my back but these are rare
5) yesterday I noticed a new one below the wrist for about a few minutes.
6) crawling in calf below cal for top of foot
7 ) little soreness in back thigh.
8) the clinical weakness is so far not there. I can lift things, pmove walk on toes, heels etc. And the neuro told me no atrophy.
Since this is happening only for 4 weeks I'm worried. Could it "develop" Into something. These are twitches I can physically see so I know I'm not imagining it.
I'm refraining myself from reading online now. I'm 35.
I tried to get Into BFS support so I can ask these questions there but for whatever reason i haven't yet been able to post there. I don't want to bother you guys here.

I'm trying to make peace with whatever it is.

Unfortunately the bfs group 's admin is not participating any more and no one else has been given permission to approve new members there is a thread there about it.
We can only tell you here what we already have. Read again Dr Hardiman's comments on twitching. She is very famous as an ALS expert. What she said has been said by many other ALS specialists.
And as Mike says weakness is what matters and what they look for.
