I had an emg that came out clean. My qustion is my twitching had only gone on for three weeks before th test was it to soon for the emg to pick up als?. My nuero said it would have but still scard.

By the time you have twitching, a lot of damage has already been done. Twitching is what your muscles do to try and heal. How on earth did u convince a Dr to do an EMG that soon? Do you have weakness too?

So how soon should you get EMG's? Mine were in April and July of 2012, symptoms mainly began in Feb.

No I had no weakness. I was having the emg done because I was having test done for ms. Everything came back negative. The twitching I have is localized to my shoulders. So there is no way the twitching can come before weakness.

You would have weakness. Clinical weakness, not perceived weakness. Your EMG was clean. Do the happy dance. You don't have ALS. You may have BFS. You may just be stressed.

Beach Guy, my emg on my arms showed issues at least a year before I had any weakness or twitching. And I believe the twitching is more upper motor neuron, and the emg picks up the nerve denervation of the lower motor neurons (not sure if that's 100% correct). Bottom line, not ALS at this point in time.

I had my first EMG when I couldn't sign my name or pick up a paper clip or walk very easily any more. I didn't notice any twitching until after I was diagnosed.

I had weakness long before the twitching about two years. I had started to drop things, been unable to open bottles, and hated zippers. It was actually my internist who saw the twitches and a high CPK three that sent me back to neurology for the first dirty EMG. By that time the weakness had been going on for almost 2 years. I was lucky that it was limited to my right hand which is of course my dominant hand. I had for EMGs before there was a dirty one. My case was complicated by a bunch of normal old jock orthopedic problems. But we are each different which makes it such a complicated diagnosis.

Thank you all for your reponses. I went to a sports medicine doctor who sent me back to the nuero. my appointment is tomorrow I do not know what to ak for another clinical evaluation or a new emg?

You don't need a new EMG. What is your concern? You have twitching? You say you went to a sports doc, so I assume you put a lot of physical demands on your body. Look into BFS. Ask the neuro about it and if he feels you need further testing he will order it.

Yes I work out a lot my concern is that the twitching is localized contant and not everywhere. From what I have read about bfs i that it comes and goes and i not localized.

Can I ask, how the hell do you get appointments so fast? If you've just recently had an EMG and it was normal you don't
need another one. Let the neurologist take the lead. Have ypur symptoms evolved or got worse?

i got the appointment because someone happened to cancel right before i called. my symptoms have changed in that my twitching is now contant in my shoulder even when i sleep.

Have the mentioned neuromyotonia? That cause fasiculatioms that happen when you are sleeping

However, it usually shows up with continues muscle activity on an emg.
