DaddyO was being a fool today! I enabled him. I hope all cALS will learn from this and stand steadfast, when giving food to their pALS. When the doc says nothing by mouth except soft or pureed foods, LISTEN! Don't give in to temptation. If your cALS wants pizza, put it in the blender with tomato sauce and a bit of broth and cream. Just do it! If they want ~~BACON~~ put it in the blender with navy beans, broth and cream!
DO NOT GIVE IN! I did that today. I almost lost him. I was scared $#!+less! He wanted a ~~BACON~~ sandwich. I gave him the shrew face and said, "No you will have a hard time with it!" He replied, "I won't. MAKE ME THE SANDWICH!" I made it and fed him one bite. It, of course, takes him a while to "chew." I'm watching my son and nephew play a video game as I wait to give him another bite. He starts making the strangling noises and saliva is going everywhere! The look in his eyes scared me! I didn't know if he was having a spasm, as usual, or was choking. OK...I really had an idea he was choking, but didn't want to believe it!
He can still walk (precariously). He was in a panic, flailing his arms and swinging his head. It just so happened my brother showed up to pick his son up as this was going on. My son and nephew were frozen in fear! They started silently crying. I yelled at them to let my brother in, as the door was locked. I was trying to get my husband into a position to give him the Heimlich, but he was walking and flailing and choking! My brother didn't know what the hell was happening and I calmly asked him, "Do you know how to do the Heimlich maneuver? I'm too short." He nods and grabs him and they do a Heimlich dance to the kitchen sink. After 4 tries, my husband is still choking. He's about to go down. My brother finally used brute force and the bacon flies!
My brother literally saved my husband's life! He was about to black out! He would've died. I'm sure of it!
This scared the crap out of my husband. I mean, REALLY scared him. He would not shut up about how he was a goner. I believe him and so should y'all!
Don't let Mr. Reaper get your pALS because he is just plain stubborn about eating solid food, please!
