Al/other mods,

I've been a member here for about a year now.
I have a close friend with ALS and I would like to consider myself part of his support team.

That being the case, I come here a lot.
My problem is, I have very restricted access to this site. I can't PM anyone, I can't view pictures, etc. and every time I click on something I seem to get a 'you don't have access to this' message.

I've contacted someone before about this and was granted some next level of access, but that now seems to have left again or I simply need more access privileges. I understand the need to police this forum for spam and whatnot, but I'm just a guy trying to help a friend and it is very difficult to do that here with all the restrictions placed on my account.

In short, I'm looking for full access privileges please. I have no other way of contacting you so I am starting this thread. Feel free to delete it after it has served its purpose, which is hopefully to get me full access at this site.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

You will need to post some more before you are allowed full access. Not sure of the number of posts you need though.

Nice of you to help your friend.

I understand your frustration, but CJ is correct, you have to contribute to the forum with more posts before full access is granted. That had to be put in place because of spammers signing up and flooding the forum.

I know you are not a spammer but you have not been posting either and it is the posting that gains you full access.
So, feel free to contribute and ask questions, in no time at all you will have access to the things you mentioned.

Ah, I see.

Thanks.

I've been more of a lurker, but I definitely have some stuff to offer.

My friend is currently on a bi-pap and has no use of neck, hands, and minimal in legs, but damn it if we ain't going to Foxwoods casino tomorrow so he can play in a live poker tournament. I'm his hands at the table while his brother monitors the bi-pap battery and everything else.

His brother also rigged up this great headrest for car trips using a catchers mask helmet (no front piece on helmet) fastened to a board, that is then fastened to the car seat. Its really great for head-stabilization. I've taken a pic and will be posting it if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the reply jimercat. I guess its time to start contributing...

Head stabilizer thingy:

The straps go around the headrest in the car. I used to hold his head from the back seat, but not anymore.

^^^that's his brother btw

Actually new members can send PM's to myself or David the site Administrator. That's a nifty way to hold a head steady. Thanks for the picture. See after a few posts you're half way there.

That's great! I have a feeling you will have lots to share with us!

Oh Foxwoods - I just realized where you're from and we're practically neighbors. I was just in Wrentham this past Saturday at the outlets.
My mom used to go to Foxwoods all the time (she's a Twin River woman now), but one time at Foxwoods she met Aerosmith's Steve Tyler in the parking garage. How cool is that? (and , I wasn't with her!)

I too am from Massachusetts and used to love going to Foxwoods----playing Black Jack---------poker is out of my league. I don't go there any more--too tired to endure the casino scene.
jtag------I give you and your friend (what is his name?a lot of credit for continuing to do the things you love even though I am sure it is not easy. Absolutely love the head contraption for the car--very creative to say the least!

blackjack-----Oh how I love that game........................Way too much...................Way to much................

It seems to me that this is the best als board on the Internet. I don't even know who's responsible for it being here.

I'm really lazy.

hopingforcure,
Now I've got the urge to play again---I too, love that game so much--seems one could sit at a table for quite awhile and have fun (compared to slots) you and I both know they get your money one way or another. I have one girlfriend who drives to Foxwoods once a month, maybe I'll go next time--might help me forget my woes. I am just so tired all the time and my voice is so hoarse I am embarrassed. I hope you have a place in Pa to go to. Anyone else out there like Black Jack?

The ALS Society of Canada started it but gave it up a few years ago and David and I took over running it. David pays all the costs and I do the day to day stuff with my trusty moderators. That's the short version.

Foxwoods is basically 1 of 2 things Dan wants to do, so that's what we're doing.
We hit the roulette floors, letting Dan bet on (against, actually) different trends he sees.

Watching his brother is amazing. I've been trying to learn along the way, but he makes it all look so easy.

During the course of one trip he/we:
-switch bipap over to battery
-move Dan to car and get settled
-arrive and get Dan into his chair
-stop for a drink, which involves getting Dan's head down so he can drink.
-hit the floors, which are LOUD!, and trying our best to hear Dan on the amplifier and also interpret things we can interpret
-stop for a drink again midway, stand Dan up for a good 20-30 seconds to stretch him out and let him readjust his ass
-hit the floors again
-get Dan back in the car and settled, then back in the house when we get home
-and all the other little stuff along the way

Its impressive to watch. Dan's Dad and I tried a run a couple weeks back without bro and failed miserably. As Dan said afterwards, "There needs to be one chef, and one assistant." Truer words have never been spoken. We did fine, but it just wasn't the same. It'll get better though, but time isn't on your side with this disease as you all know.

One of the better things that's happened to Dan is finding this place on the cape, Compassionate Care (http://www.ccals.org/home.php), that basically gives you all this expensive stuff for free on loan. I don't know much about it, other than it was started by one man who just wanted to help people. He's gotten a spare bi-pap, battery packs, a high-end chair with a reclining radius thing, and numerous other items like voice amplifiers, etc.

Dan's doing a walk during the Falmouth Road Race this year where different people each walk a mile with him and I think his charity is Compassionate Care for that too.

Be back later
