Hi,
My husband just had his tube placed on Monday so this is new to us. Is it common for contents to stay in the tube? He seems to think that in hospital when they gave him a feeding the tube was clear. But now that we're home and I give him a feeding the tube is not empty afterward. Is this ok?

You should have been told to flush with a full syringe of water both before and after a feeding.
If no feedings are being done, daily flushes are needed.

That being said, I often see some gastric content work its way up the tube. Never been a problem.

More info here on Diane's website: ALS From Both Sides: Feeding Tubes

It doesn't seem to matter how much I flush with, I always have some formula work its way into the tube before the next feeding. If I use too much water, look out GERD! LOL I had this G tube placed the end of April. My first one was placed in March, and had a clamp, so I didn't have that issue.

kind of makes sense that some liquid content would be in the tube ... it's no problem :)

If you can still eat and have spaghetti, you may have a reddish orange tube for a while!
