The research shows that the most common known risk factor for ALS and frontotemporal dementia, or FTD—a gene mutation known as C9orf72—causes cellular highways to jam, impairing brain functions. However, in tests with human and fly cells, the scientists were successful in using a molecular therapy to clear up those jams.

Thanks Greg. Even more exciting 2 other studies had similar findings Three ?Remarkable? Studies Say Clogged Pores May Cause ALS; Drug Targets ID?d

It is also worth noting that the c9 mutation is found in a percentage of SALS as well as FALS and also FTD even as separate illness with no ALS. At least 2 current members have posted about being apparent SALS but turning out to have c9 ( Atsugi's wife and hlindley) and I know of at least one former member though he did not share it here.

I have been waiting for the trials for the gene blocking therapy. They told me next year but that is what I heard the last 2 years too.
