My mom passed away from ALS she was diagnosed in spring of 1996 she passed away in fall of 2001. What I most remember was her left foot dragging. I am now 33 and about this time last year started to feel weakness in my legs. Just a week ago i felt weakness and numbness in my left arm. My leg is starting to feel numb today along with being weak today. How quick or slow is the progression of ALS from one limb to another in your case? Does it come and go? For example one day easy to walk next day hard to get out of a chair. I am going to go see my doc here in the coming weeks. What should I ask? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear of your recent concerns.

In my case once weakness happened it did not come and go. All other people with ALS are the same, it is a progressive disease so once you have weakness it remains.

As you likely already know, the time is very different for each person and what is affected next is very different for each person.

Oh, welcome to the forum!

I agree with what Joel said. Just go to the doc and see what they say.

I wish you well!

Ask for a referral to a neurologist, and get a EMG test

Thanks everyone I will be going at the end of the month to go see my Doc for a specialist referral. I don't think it's ALS because the weakness and numbness sensation comes and goes but sure would like to know what it is or isn't. Thanks for the help.

hi smoothmonte: my case is just like yours except I have slurred speech even slurred speech one day it seems good & the other day its bad I also have 4 memberes of my family passed away for als, what can I do except to satisfied with good wishes

From what I remember weakness is progressive like one day you can hold 10lbs and then down the road you can't hold the same 10lbs. Am I correct?

Simply put, yes that is how it usually progresses. You would probably notice problems with fine motor skills, turning keys, buttoning clothes etc. also.

AL.

Thanks for the answers I guess i will be keeping an eye for fine motor skills such as typing. You all have been a great help.

I don't really have problems with numbness either..

Another question I have is what came 1st for you muscle weakness or some occasional muscle twitching. Am I mistaken in believing that twitching only comes after the death of the nerve sending the signal or the muscle.

Twitching is basically the nerves calling looking for a connection..Twitching itself really is nothing on it's own...
