Hubby and I decided to get the medical dictations from all his recent exams so when we see the ALS specialist next week we have them in hand.

I see a lot of talk about the nerve conduction test being an important part of the process of out ruling ALS & perhaps diagnosing another disease, this is what his nerve conduction test said ( will not type the whole thing and keep in mind my husband has speech and swallowing and drooling ).

Doctor stated acute and chronic denervation changes in three extremities, with possibility of multifocal conduction block, upper motor neuron signs along with fasciculations, doctor also mentioned see fibrillations noted in his tongue & quadriceps, also when asked to walk on heel or toe my husband could walk on heels but not on toes ( is this a sign ?).

They mention mostly his right side having marked weakness and upper extremities especially near the neck area, anyway I am hoping that because it is only 3 areas showing weakness that he does not fly under the als banner, but I am also realistic that the above very well could be ALS they do mention Lou Gehrig in the dictation but as probable, it seems like we have a lot of doctor visits to find out what it is and we ar not to happy about it as time of diagnoses is sooooo important for this disease :0(

Your input is valuable please write back with your experience HUGS!

Sweetie, I'm sorry to say that yes... it is very possible, or as the report said, "probable". Although most of his symptoms are showing in his upper body, not being able to walk on his toes is a sign that he has early stage problems in the leg(s). My first symptoms were in one leg, and losing the ability to lift my toes was my earliest symptom, followed by not being able to walk on them. I don't think the difference in the order of loss (heel vs. toes) is important. In this disease, there is so much diversity in regard to Upper Neuron, Lower Neuron, and both where it begins as well as progression rates (which can even change within one person.)

I am sorry to say, I would have to agree with Ann. The results sound markedly the same as my husband's recent results and we are now confirmed with the ALS diagnosis. It is good that they have pretty definite results the first time as my hubby had to endure 4 EMG/nerve conduction tests to get those results. The ALS specialist should be able to give you so much information as well. We will all be hoping for the best for him and you will find lots of support here regardless of the final diagnosis.

Hi and yes my heart is heavy at the thought of what we face this week with our next appointment, heavy because I do not think we can stretch this out mentally too long, with a definitive diagnoses ( as terroristic as that is ) we can both move on to the next plan in our daily lives as things are pretty much in turmoil right now ! thank you for your input and BIG HUGS to you both from myself and Don.

pudge44, I wish you both the best and pray that this is not ALS even though it is pointing in that direction. We are here for both of you no matter.
