First of all, I am not a Doctor nor pretend to be! This is advise my Mom got from her Speech therapist.
1-When choking on saliva, Say UH OH in a strong voice. This helps my mom when she is having trouble with the choking.
2-When they did the x-ray while she was eating-- they found that she felt as if she had swallowed the food, but it was still half way down. If she followed up with a spoon of sherbet it washed the food down. (It would explain that "cleansing the pallet" thing at restaurants!)
Ok, this is all I have to add--but it has seemed to help her.
