Hi everyone,

My mom who will turn 66 on Friday was just diagnosed with mnd two days ago. Now after reading so much I have a million questions. I am hoping someone can give me some insight. She only has muscle loss in her thumbs, she has had a foot drop for about 2-3 years now.( She was first diagnosed as having a stroke.) She has slurred speech. That has been going on for about a year. The Dr. Said her breathing is excellent and she has no loss in her upper body, the Dr. was surprised by her arm strength. Am I just getting my hopes up or does this seem to be progressing slowly? As for which mnd she has we will not know until she goes to the specialist in about a month. She walks on the treadmill everyday for about 15 minutes without any shortness of breath and does arm exercises also. I appreciate any input on this.

Thanks
Dana

sorry for your mums daignosis...in my own experience it does sound like her progression is fairly slow. I was diagnosed a year ago, and have lost my speech completely, can only walk a little with aid and now my arms are beginning to go. My breathing is ok, but reducing, and I can still eat and drink but with a little difficulty.
I recently saw a neuro physio and told her my thumbs were getting weaker, between the thumb and first finger and was told that weakness here is quite common. I hope your mother continues to progress slowly. Wish you all the best.

Thanks Jennifer, I really appreciate the info. I hope everything goes well for you, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Dana,

I think with only minor progression over three years you can be quite confident that your mother has slow progression. In my experience, one of the few constants in ALS is that overall progression rate, be it fast or slow, is fairly consistent. There are exceptions of course.

Keep up with the exercise.

I agree that slow progression is a really good and positive sign, and it seem's to as John said, be a example of a good slow movement.

I can't really attest to the level of progression but it does sound slow and hopefully will continue to be very slow to nonexistent progression for your Mom.
From another Dana.
