Am I correct in thinking that muscle twitching getting much worse after exercise is NOT consistent with MND?
I can see this listed clearly as a BFS symptom, but not MND.
Thanks in advance x

Hello,

Muscle twitches after exercises have the scientific name of benign fasciculations. Benign fasciculations can occur even in the absence of exercise, although exercise is a well known trigger of this condition. Benign fasciculations usually involve the feet, hands, arms, or legs, although almost any muscle can be affected. By their very definition, they are benign and aren't indicative of serious underlying disease.

Benign fasciculations or muscle twitches after exercise is surprisingly common. After the muscles have undergone an intense workout, biochemical changes take place as the muscle responds to the stress of exercised Lactic acid builds up in the fatigued muscle and formation of free radicals occur which believe can alter the excitability of muscle tissue.

I hope this has clarified your questions and/or doubts.

Hi, thanks for replying

I guess I wasn't clear why I was asking. My husband is currently undergoing tests and awaiting a second opinion as his neurologist said he suspected MND on first visit!

His muscle twitching is constant in the one arm that has some loss of dexterity, muscle shrinkage/weakness in, but the twitching goes crazy after exercise. I was thinking this was a good sign maybe?!?!

You husband's Neurologist suspected MND during his first visit? Really?
Did he run an EMG on your husband? Without an EMG, how can he reach that conclusion?
Did he perform clinical tests on your husband to detect hyperreflexia, Babinski, or ankle clonus? (I ask about these tests as they reveal UMN problems). If performed, what was the result?

I think you better off go for a second opinion with a Neuro who specializes on Neuromuscular problems since he/she can better assess what is going on with your husband.

Yes first neuro visit! However, he had a couple of consultations with an orthopaedic surgeon first as he was referred by GP with suspected carpel tunnel, then it moved onto suspected trapped ulnar nerve, then suspected brachial plexopathy. Between which he had an EMG, and MRI or shoulder & spine. At this point he was sent to see the neuro. MRI was clear, but EMG wasn't.

To be honest we were stunned he was talking about MND so soon.

He has now referred us to a specialist I believe, he said that MND was his specialist interest i think was the term he used. He has also requested a second EMG on all limbs, a MRI of his brain, and blood tests.

He did ask him to undress, and spent a lot of time examining him but not sure whether he tested the things you are referring to though sorry as I am not familiar with them.

I am starting to feeling pretty positive about it though, as I think there are several things that DON'T point in the MND direction. I was hoping the twitching getting worse after exercise was another one but struggling to find an answer so was hoping someone on here might be able to confirm either way.

Sorry if it seems a silly question.

Your question is not silly. I have exercise intolerance. When I over do I don't twitch then I shake and all my muscles quiver. I get twitches and such when I am nervous or after I have rested for a while.
