Thank you for the response I am just wondering if any of you have had what they call jalapeno eyes? With a clear running nose? I have had this since April and nobody the neurologist eye doctors cannot give me any answers they call it jalapeno eyes but nobody knows for sure what it is what it is I am just looking for any information as it's been a struggle once I was diagnosed with ALS it seems that everything I have the doctors blame it on ALS and really do not look into what is causing pain burning with my eyes and I am always in extreme pain my arms especially aren't always painful and everything leads to ALS I am just wondering if any of you have found relief with your pain? They told me to take ibuprofen which really doesn't help any suggestions? I am grateful for anybody who has any advice for me I feel so alone thank you

Did you see an ophthalmologist? Even if you had to consult via telehealth, there might be more specialty expertise in the Twin Cities?

If you are saying you are also in pain from your arms, is that all the time, when you wake up...? Do you sleep in a hospital bed? Do you use BiPAP?

Sorry for the delay yes I have seen eye doctors and no one can seem to explain this? A neurologist from the New York area told me that this was something she knew about with other ALS patients and it was called jalapeno eyes because of the acids being released from your muscles? I was just curious if anyone else had this as my neurologist here at the U of M did not know anything about this being a symptom so just wondering if any of you have suffered from this and as far as my arms yes they hurt pretty much all day long Do not sleep in a hospital bed and I do not use a bipap as my breathing is normal my breathing test have always been good my eyes do that secretion of burning acid at least three to four times a day along with occasional daily nose secretion if any of you have experienced this I would love to hear about it or any suggestions of how to relieve my arms thank you have a great day

My suggestion for arm pain is to get a hospital bed because lying flat strains your shoulders and other joints, including the elbows. A supine position with your elbows bent and hands on your chest may cause less stress. Or if you must be on your side at times, you can remember to bend your arms and it becomes second nature. You can prop your elbows and/or forearms on foam. Also, being able to angle your torso might even help your eyes a bit.

I do not know what drops you have used? My husband's eyes were often inflamed -- he had numerous eye surgeries before ALS and was blind in one eye -- we used Genteal drops morning and night and sometimes in the afternoon, in his case, the "mild/moderate" version, but they make more "clingy" drops that last longer as well. Not all drug stores carry all the varieties so you may have to go on line.

I have heard of it as a symptom -- but whatever it's called or which aspect of ALS it relates to is really not important next to relief, I'm sure. So that's why I ask what you have tried.

Jalapeño eyes, I like that. My husband called it spicy eyes. I have no idea what causes it, but after a year of suffering my neurologist finally consulted an ophthalmologist, who said it was dry eyes. I was skeptical, I'd experienced dry eyes in allergies and this felt very different. All the same, I had nothing to lose. The ophthalmologist suggested preservative-free eye drops 3 times a day and an warm compress on my eyes twice a day.

I typically only do drops once a day, an eye mask twice a week, but even that little has made a huge difference. I've read that PALS experience dry eyes due to, among other things, reduced blink rate and increased eye demands (like eye gaze computers).

Just a possibility.

I just started having watery eyes that feel like acid is burning them.
I have had the pain so bad that I didn't know what to do. I did run cold water over my eyes. And that calmed them down. I was just doing the same thing just before seeing this message.
I don't have arm pain, just no strength.

There's been discussion over the years on the forum from quite a few people experiencing the same- it's not unusual for folk with MNS/ALS and there are a few different reasons for it. If you look up "acid tears" in the search box, you'll find some discussion and some solutions.
