Hello everyone,

I have been having constant fasciculations since about Februrary. I saw a neuro on June 19th who did an EMG and nerve conduction on my limbs and found no abnormalities. About a week after seeing her the fascics began on my tongue and have been constant there ever since. I feel them when at rest and see them when I open my mouth and my tongue is at rest. I notified her of this new symptom and she recommended I see an ALS specialist in Milwaukee.

I have no weakness, no slurring, no difficulty swallowing. Can tongue fascics be BFS or are they always indicative of ALS?

thank you,

Karen

I would like to know also. I had a clean emg in may and then a month later---same thing. my tongue twitched notable for 2-3 days then stopped. I told my als Dr. and saw her after. She looked in my mouth, she did not say anything either way. (she doesnt always tell me things due to my worrying). Then it started again in the last 2 days very lightly on the other side of mouth--not constant. Same as you, I can swallow, no slurring, or anything else. (a phelgm ball feeling off and on).

Anyway, I also wondered about bfs. Of all the twitching this is the most worrisome!:?

hello

firstly note...the tongue should be in a resting position inside the floor of the mouth.
tongue fassics are random unorganized twitches or dimpling on the surface of the tongue, they do not go away but can be increased after stimulation like eating, talking.
some weakness early on though may be slight would be noted, also any jaw or swallowing problems.
take care

Have you ever had an emg on the tongue? I thought at my next one in november i would request, but I am fearfull of the pain. The one in the body was not great.

what do you mean by resting postion? how can you tell? my tongue (the front part) touches the roof of mouth when closed. I have asked my family if there's does that and they said it does.

lol. i mean when the neuro looks for fassics, obviously the mouth is open but the tongue should be in a resting position on the floor of the mouth.
everyone who sticks there tongue out has some fassics or movement so this is not the correct way to look for them.
no i have not had a bulbar emg yet,i am seeing a speech therapist on monday.
i began with mainly umn symptoms in my body some years ago. then about 18mths ago i started with slight swallowing problems at that time i declined a swallowing test as it was not too bad. then at the start of the year jaw/facial spasms, problems chewing resulting in major wieght loss, then recently my tongue felt funny sort of bigger and more flaccid and my speech gets slowed and a bit lispy. it was only by chance looking at my tongue after the recent tongue symptoms i noticed the fassics, you can't feel them as you do in your body. all this has been slow but progressive.
hope this helps.
take care

Hi ... I had an EMG on the tongue in May, and it was tolerable ... Not as painful as it sounds ... but I was relieved when it was over! I found that the thought of it was worse than the actual test. I tried to relax and slow my breathing down when they did it, and that helped. And it's over very quickly!

About resting position: When you stick your tongue out, it can cause benign fasciculations, as I understand it. That's why they shine a little flashlight in your mouth when they look for faccis on the tongue. You open your mouth, but just let the tongue rest while they look around.

Hope this helps,
Beth

lol, thats funny. I thought you ment that your tongue should not be touching the roof of your mouth. Kinda funny the things we notice that we never really paid much attention to in the past.

I have not had spasms, although back in april, my face felt like it would but did not. I would say it feels like right before you have a cramp. It was only on left side, I still have tingling there.

You are right, when my neuro looked in my mouth at last vist (after complaint of tongue fasic) my tongue was at rest. She did not tell me if she saw anything and I was to much of a wimp to ask! I will next time.

Take care!
