Hi there ,

I am new to this site because I would like some information and thoughts . I am a 23 year old female from Australia (I know from researching statistics the likeliness of me having ALS/MND is very unlikely). My story begins a year and a half ago. I had very strange flu like symptoms and sore joints I pestered my Gp for months about it and was diagnosed with Ross River Virus and was told my symptoms should dissapear. I started getting muscle twitches just randomly everywhere -still to this day , i had a sore throat for months and i went to my GP to be told it was post nasal drip however that lasted for almost 6 months , then the lump in the throat feeling , food started getting stuck in my throat, i became incredibly unbalanced mostly when i stand still or close my eyes this happens, i had pains all over my body, and bad headaches my doctor dismissed this as anxiety . 8 months into these symptoms i found out i was pregnant , whilst being pregnant all of these strange symptoms went away. I am currently almost 3 months post baby , my symptoms came back a month after having my little girl , but they have become worse , i have had pains in my arms and legs, pain when breathing in my rib cage , balance issues that make it difficult for me to walk, muscle twitches everywhere , facial numbness (as if i cant move my face muscles) , throat issues that include food getting stuck in my throat -tiny pieces of food coming back up and now i have excess saliva. I have also had problems with muscle pains and tingling in my arms and legs most times when i wake up one my arms is numb. About a month ago i experienced problems with my grip in my hands , and my right hand completely seized up ... And using my fingers became difficult . But now my hands are fine except i get numbness between my index finger and my thumb... I feel like if i hold my hands out in front of me they twitch uncontrollably. I have seen several doctors and they refuse to give me a referal to a neuro because I am "too young " to have this type of disease. While i really want to believe the doctors and i hope i dont have als im just so concerned . I am still able to do all the things i normally do , sometimes im in pain but i can still do them... If that helps at all... :/

Bumblebee, your third sentence from the bottom...

"I have seen several doctors and they refuse to give me a referral to a neuro because I am "too young " to have this type of disease."

There's more to it than that.

Probably... your symptoms are not inclusive to ALS. They are doctors.

You also wrote...

"whilst being pregnant all of these strange symptoms went away."

AlS symptoms do not come, go and come back... it's why it's called a progressive disease.

Have they discussed postpartum anxiety?

You don’t have ALS. Read the sticky at the top of this DIHALS forum, the one that says “read before posting”. None of your symptoms suggest ALS.

You got me reading about Ross River Virus. For the uninformed, it is a mosquito borne illness endemic in Australia and the South Pacific. Fever, joint pain, and rashes are the main manifestations. Most cases are self-limited, but some do become chronic and may develop inflammatory arthritis with swollen joints. Treatment is supportive including use of antinflammatories.

There are other viral infections and mosquito borne illnesses which can present similarly. Lupus can also cause similar symptoms. I can tell you that alot of rheumatic conditions remit during pregnancy only to recur postpartum. Fibromyalgia (fatigue, aching, poor sleep, and sometimes feeling of numbness) is also common when recovering from chronic infections and also common post partum.

So you may want to see a rheumatologist and possibly an infectious disease specialist to get further clarity on your symptoms.

But it’s not ALS. Not even close. :)

I do have health anxiety , however my anxiety only started because i was having these strange symptoms. I just wanted some opinions from people who have been diagnosed , im a young mum obviously im abit worried , i know anxiety can affect the body physically in numerous ways , but I also believe people know when something is not quite right with their own body.

I did also read the sticky note before posting it was that note that made me feel better within myself . But i just could not shake the fear of having it .
