Without ALS I'd likely never have learned:

- Just about anyone can safely park in a handicap space
- Doctor and dentist offices aren't ready for nonambulatory people
- How expensive wheelchair vans are
- The obscene profit margins on durable medical equipment
- How to eat with my left hand
- That my arms are about six inches too short
- How powerful a force gravity really in
- You cannot easily slide on bare skin
- How uncomfortable lift reclliners really are
- What a palliative care nurse does
- Men get yeast infections
- The name of the sacrum bone
- What a condom catheter is
- Bedbath is a misnomer
- How really wonderful it feels to have water running on your head
- Private parts easily become public parts
- Sleeping on one's side is (was) wonderful
- The truly theraputic value of the human touch
- Who my real friends are

Just sharing......

I agree and would like to add:

I've learned

that it is not good to fall when no one is around to pick you up.

I have learned how nice people really are. Especially those you never met. And most of them are sent by God who has my back now that I need him

My best friend is the 85 year old man down the street Mr. Hopper. I always have someone to tell stories about WW2 or his crane operating days 40s and 50s. I go there when I need a laugh.

I have learned to turn off the powerchair when there's a hug coming.
To turn off the powerchair when transferring.
To turn off the powerchair before charging it.
And never toss anything over the joystick. The powerchair will not be turned off and will move erratically.

Whoa, Steven. Does she still give you hugs? Maybe with a look of panic on her face?

Shon, you men at least can stand to pee. Assuming you can stand, of course. ;-)

Great thread rmstudier!

Without ALS I'd likely never have learned:

- what AFOs are and that they leave funky tan lines
- all the places in the house I can grab on to for balance
- that I miss tying my own shoes
- that I don't miss driving all that much
- that there are alot of amazingly supportive, encouraging and helpful people united by this disease
- that my golf game will never get any better
- that I can ask for help
- that stairs are from the devil
- that with prayer and laughter I can do this

and that this might make a great start for my next blog!
