Hi. I am a teacher that began having slurred thick speech in the spring. I also have begun to choke on food a d liquids and have some issues swallowing pills. I have no teal muscle weakness that I can tell but do have some twitching. Have seen a neurologist and he agrees that something is going on. Having MRI on Friday. Very anxious as you all can imagine. Thank you for any input.

Hi
waiting for tests is very stressful. I hope you get answers soon. Until you have results it is probably best to keep busy/ do something fun. Worrying doesn’t help and you never get the time back. If things turn out well you worried about nothing. If they go badly worrying didn’t help either

if tests point to MND you will need a second opinion from an ALS specialist - I would advise that even if you are seeing one now. If this is a general neurologist then it is even more important. the other urgent thing at that point would be voice recording/ banking

Thank you Nikki. God Bless. Prayers for all here.

My MRI came back wit no abnormalities today. We are devastated because neurologist all but said that my symptoms indicate little other than ALS. I have thick speech, choking occasionally and he indicated slight hyper flexation. Will have an EMG and definitely a second opinion but based on his attitude it is pretty much a foregone conclusion. So very scared as I know you can all relate to. Thank you for any input.

I am sorry the mri did not give you an answer. When is your emg? Make sure your second opinion is an ALS specialist if the emg points in that direction

EMG is scheduled for August 3. But neurologist is pretty much saying that there are no other causes. Is that in fact the case? Going to internist today to get referral for 2nd opinion. I guess I am still just grasping at hope.

We can’t say what else might be on the table I think there are other things though they may be less likely. Have you researched and found an ALS clinic? You want university level probably Emory if you are reasonably near

Yes. Neuro said Emory would be next step after EMG. We are just north of Atlanta. Just so hard to wrap our brains around this. I know you all understand.
