Mildred stood helpless as the fire department arrived an addressed the situation. Thoughts swirled through her head trying to make sense of all the activity surrounding her. Had someone else been in the house? Where did they go? Mildred let out a strangled cry, Elmer her beloved dog in all the confusion he was nowhere to be found.
