Before I delve into the innards of IRS,gov, I ask here for a shortcut:

We are planning a house addition to accommodate me, as our Model T era two story house would be nearly impossible to modify for handicap access. Are there tax credits, or deductions for handicap construction?

You can deduct the cost of medically necessary alterations that you are not reimbursed for. If the improvement increases the value of your home, you have to reduce the deduction by the amount of the increase. You might have to convince the IRS that the addition was more reasonable than modification. Google IRS publication 502, and good luck!

Thank you, Nutsy. Pub 502 has it. I downloaded a couple of other pdf pubs from IRS, but they didn't cover it.
