Hi,

I’ve got a question about twitching that didn’t seem to be covered in the 'before you post' post.

For the past 6 weeks I’ve had all over twitching in my calfs and they can go down to my feet. I wasn’t overly concerned until I noticed my tongue also twitching a lot this week. Which after Googling 🤦‍♂️ has lead me here.

My question is if the twitching started at the same time in both calfs and is pretty similar in both does this point more to something like BFS rather than ALS or does it not matter. I just read somewhere an ALS type twitch is “normally” asymmetrical.

As bit of context we’ve had super stressful year with my father passing away in April, my mother waiting for cancer results, recent high blood pressure diagnosis for myself and a good few other family challenges. So, I’m hoping to put this down to stress! Been running more recently and eating a low salt diet (to help the BP) for what it’s worth.

Guess I’m just reaching for a bit of reassurance before seeing the GP next week. Male. 44

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm sorry for your challenges. Going too low on salt can itself provoke twitching, especially with an increase in exercise. Dehydration is also common when you pick up the pace, but exercise also benefits BP. And sodium reduction below a certain threshold will not help BP. So I would take a hard look at your electrolytes/hydration balance in diet.

Twitching as you describe does not sound like ALS. This is a good time to discuss some rules of the road for your diet and hydration with your GP.

Thanks I'll bear that in mind when seeing the GP. The only thing is the calf muscle twitching start a few weeks before lowering salt in my diet. The tongue twitching (lots of them, all over when relaxed, but can't feel them) started, well noticed this week so could be related. Thanks again.
