Hey guys, had my swallow study yesterday. My doctor thought my problem may be in my throat and I was aspirating causing my chronic couch. The speech pathologist yesterday said the throat was fine, but when the food and liquid got to the esophagus as soon as it entered it completely slowed way down and that is what is causing the choking and pain in chest area while eating, she did say it could cause food to back up in throat and cause aspiration. So off to Gastro Dr. Speech said she only works with the mouth to the esophagus. Does this sound like anything anyone has heard of. She told me to slow way down while eating until I see Gasto. How can I slow down, now I have a GP, Gastro, urologist, and an EMG scheduled this month.lol. Thanks everyone

If your entire esophagus is being affected, then that is "good news" given that most of the esophagus is lined by smooth muscle (the upper portion is lined by skeletal muscle). ALS does not affect smooth muscle.

Slowed esophageal motility could certainly cause reflux into the back of the throat, which could lead to the aspiration you are having.

Slowly but surely I think they are getting close to diagnosing you with something . . . somoething that is treatable.

Take care and keep us posted.

Thanks for reply, I think with all of these Dr. visits they should get to the bottom if it soon. You make me feel so hopeful, thanks. Last year when I started getting ill every test came back fine. now it just seems every test has a little something wrong. Can things really change that much in 1 1/2 years, I guess they can. Have a great day all.

I was told the same by the speech people after the swallow study and am off to a gastro on Friday. The speech people told me to eat small amounts and then to drink to wash it down, eat drink, eat drink..... that should help reduce the build up, hopefully.

Hi Renee,

I did not call, I have been busy with the first week of school and now it is late and my husband would not be happy if i was on the phone pertaining to this site.

I was gonna tell you that a few yrs back that my mom was having real bad chest pain and alot of other issues. then she started to even thow up her food because she could not swallow it. she lost 80 pounds and we thought she was dying, her pancreas was swollen and all. It turns out that she had a ulcer on her duodenduem and it was swelling shut. Her system shut down, she is fine today and maybe you will find something in your gastro? she could not get her food down because it was swelling shut before her stomach. YOu just never know.

I know it is hard when so many things are going wrong, little or big.

I dont know how you do it, with the kids and the appts! OH, and cleaning your house (ha-ha). BTW my hubby said no more cleaner.....poor me.

well, tomorrow is my PT. YOu dont have as many docters as me yet!

bless you

april
