I have very unplesant feeling of extremely bloated stomach (upper part, under the ribs) after every meal. This got noticeably worse over the last month.

I don't know if this is a result of swallowing air, or weak abdominal muscles, or something else. Any advise on dealing with this problem will be highly appreciated.

I would go to a gastroenterologist. It sounds like your digestion is slowing. Also, pay attention (while you wait for the appointment) as to what is more bothersome. If carbs such as pasta and cooked easy to digest vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes) don't give as much trouble as raw uncooked veggies, meats, etc, then that would point to this as well. Its not something to ignore. Good luck!

I doubt it is digestion, because even driniking water produces the same effect. I suspect it is because of aerophagia (swallowing air), adn probably weakening abdominal muscles play some role, though I am not sure.

Just wanted to see how others are dealing with this problem, may be taking some absorbents with food ? I noticed that lying down after a meal seems to help, but at work it is not an option...

I don't think that weakened abdominal muscles would play a part in this (IMHO) I started out with just slowing of the esophagus, and then it continued on to slowed stomach emptying as well. Even though my doctors feel it is part of my disease, it more often is associated with Parkinson's, amyloidosis, scleroderma, and other metabolic disorders.

You really should go to the doctor. They can do tests that will reveal what is going on, and also perhaps the cause. It will give you more information to work with as far as a diagnosis with everything else you've had trouble with.

However, what you describe does not really fit with my problems, as I cannot lay down after a meal, it makes things much worse, and I have aspiration issues anyway. Reflux is also an aspect of it.

Either way, information gathering is good.

hi,i agree with rose as i have weak abdominal muscles .
i do get bloating, honestly sometimes i look 6mths pregnant but i know its nothing to do with weak muscles.
i try to have a activia yogurt every day, they do really work for this.
i am sure you can get them over there.:)

I have the same bloating problems after any food intake. I think it is partially because of weak muscles and also due to inactivity. I find it helps to take some enxymes and to open up my PEG tube and release some gas.

stomach muscles gone

Yes, my husband has lost the muscles in his stomach and his organs seems to be distended toward the front where his abdomen is. He also gets full quickly and gets very bloated. :( but........thankful that his legs are still strong and good. For everything that we have lost with this stinking disease we are grateful for what he has not. Hoping he stays the same and does not get worse for a long long long time. Also, hoping for a miracle and stem cell to be available to restore the damaged areas. Have to hope and stay positive.

Hello friends,
I agree with Olly and Rose, it sounds like slow gastric emptying, it was one of my first symptoms, and yep I had slow gasric emptying Gastropersis(sp), they put me on something to help this, and low and behold the neuro-muscular stuff starts in, I think it was part of my disease, but like Rose said it has a history with a bunch of neurological conditions. Just consider it another thing to add to our list..LOL

About the meds your doctors tried with you... the first notice of the slowing for me, was of my esophagus, (finally learned how to spell this LOL) and it was seen by speech pathologists during a swallow study. I was not consciously aware of anything amiss. This was after my PBP diagnosis. So, my laryngologist, who had ordered the follow up swallow study told me that there are medications that can help with this, but that those with neurological problems are not to take them. Then, when I got to my next new specialist ~ the gastro guy ~ he agreed that I should not take the medication for it. This was in reference to one specific drug, which I do not remember the name of.

In the space of maybe six or seven months, I went from not even knowing I had a problem in that area, to where I am now, which is very problematic.
