I read about this awhile ago. On the Ambient website there is a "reply" place where you can submit if you'd be interested in trying the technology. Champaign, IL is only a few hours from where I live so I submitted myself. Unfortunately haven't heard a thing. It sounds like science fiction, doesn't it?

We got a Dynavox Vmax the rep also said the they are coming out with an eye gaze system add on which is the down side most say about it. It is heavy to carry now speech is the worse but still walking so for now it is for future use. Repeating 3 times for now does it but I know that will not last long.
You may have a long wait and then that is what we were told so we went ahead and ordered on a Fri, MLK day was Mon they calledl tue and said it was approved would call when shipped we got it the next TUE.
Another thing if you go with the Vmax and want the Ram upgrade form 256 to 512 or the screen upgrade 800x600 to 1024x768 THEY HAVE to be ordered when you order or you pay extra. Insurance doesn't pay for upgrade but the difference is Ram $80 when ordered $340 later the screen is $130 when ordered $705 later.

Dynavox communication technology

First let me tell you a little about our situation. I have been taking care of my aunt for 6 years , since her als diagnosis. The only mvement she has is to blink and slight head movements. She is also on a home vent. I have tried many communication devices but, The one we currently use is the DV4 which we have had for three years. She is still able to communicate through this device. It is simple to learn, has many features, and is completely programable. you able to program in full sentences in one button to make communiction easier. You can set it up to change tv stations wach a dvd etc.. Also you can hook it up to the computer for use. It can run anything electronic easily. the dynavox can attach to a wheel chair or bed for easy viewing. the scanning feature can be used with a microlight switch as long as you have even the slightest movement it works (we used it under her chin/ and on side of headrest) They also have a device that will alow you to use it with just the blink of your eyes. It costs roughly 5,000 for the device however almost all insurances cover 80% of the device and als will cover the remaining 20%.:)
