Loved one DX
Just wanted to keep everyone informed Jonny is not doing good he went in the hospital on Friday for his breathing and they are brining hospics in on Monday. He is so tired and weary its hard to explain how he feels. Just saying his goodbyes he got to see his daughter today b/c he is not in CCU no more and that brighten his day. Anyway keep everyone informed how everything is going.

Hi Vickie! I do not believe I have ever seen one of your posts. How long has it been since you posted last? I joined this forum right after my son passed from Als on June 3, 2007. I only wish I had joined earlier. I was in denial for the longest. Little did I know that my son was leaving us so soon. Is Jonny your husband, and how long has he had Als? Another thing Vickie, I am from Tomball, too! Small world! God bless!
I am soooo sorry, Vickie.........................

Vickie, I just read all of your posts for the first time, and I am so sorry! I will be praying for you, your daughter and Jonny! I am sorry to hear that he caused you so much pain and heartbreak. May he have a peaceful departure, and may God forgive him. It is so sad to hear what this illness can do to a person. Bless his soul he lost his daughter, and now this. I am totally out of words. My heart aches for the entire family. May God bless each one of you! Keep us posted, dear.

Friend turned caregiver

Hi. I became friends with Catrina years ago. I am old enough to be her mother. We would see each other from time to time over the years, we both had busy lives. We became re-acquainted 4 years ago when she moved to the same small town I live in.

Catrina was diagnosed in 2004. She is 33 years old now. She has a 14-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son. Her husband of 14 years turned tail and ran, with Catrina's former health care provider no less, and there has been a divorce and all that goes along with that. She has no family.

This role of friend turned caregiver has developed gradually, but here I am. I have a shot back and take care of my 2-year-old granddaughter and help Catrina as much as I can. I have no background in caregiving, other than with my children, and do the best I can.

I have recently realized that I'm it for this sweet friend of my mine in a terrible position! I find myself worrying about her like a mother and decided that if I was going to be in this, I was going to step in all the way! So all the help and information I can get will be great.

We are just now coming into her not being able to stand very well and her hands and arms have just given up cooperating! Her breathing is becoming tough at times and fatigue over the smallest things, mental or otherwise, is becoming more and more common. I love this kid like a daughter and want to be a help, not a hindrance. Some guidance as to how to proceed now that I'm "in" would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Cristina's angel

I just wanted to say what a great freind to step up like that...its so hard to watch someoone you care for just dwindle down..if Cristina has not yet gotten any type of walking device such as a cane, walker etc. she needs to right away when the legs start to give out thats just the begining of injuries to the head because of the arms being weak and you are not there with her she could fall and her arms arent going to help...since social security has lifted the waiting period for people diagnosed with als she might even be able to get a scooter to ride around on. That would be alot stress on you and her both..its hard to catch a falling person you can injure yourself or her if you grab her the wrong way. I am sorry if you think I am being blunt but I am being truthful. Als runs in my family and I have also been diagnosed. I have been through this alot because of my family members before me. So if you ever have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Wow-there's a lot happening today! Vickie- You are a special person to cope with all life threw in your direction. And you did very well under trying circumstances. We are here for you anytime you need us!

Catrina's angel. I hope we will be able to help you and Catrina. The first thing that came to my mind is, did she register with her local MD chapter and is she seen by an ALS clinic. They have sevices that will make your job as a caregiver easier and safer, plus loaner eguipment, and possibly some support for the kids.

Shannon- Welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear about your DX. I felt saddened to read that this terrible disease has also affected other family members. How unfair! :( Glad you decided to join us. Cindy
Hi there

Thank you for everyones giving support. Jonny is now in hospics care they are just trying to make him comfortable for his departure. Everything is going so fast and it has been a very emotional day for me I think everything he me like a ton of bricks today and just trying to cope with the feeling that my daughters daddy is not going to be her much longer and raising my daughter now letting her know everyday that her daddy loves her. I will keep yall informed as the days go by what is going on. Wish everyone well talk to u soon

Hi Vickie! I am so glad you posted today. I have been thinking about you and your family all day long. I have been praying to God that He makes Jonny's departure peaceful. Bless his heart, from what I read I am sure his time is near. Just stay close to him, and let him know how much he means to you and your baby girl. He can still hear you if he is appearing non-responsive. This would mean a lot to him, just let him go in peace. All the outbursts and name calling that you posted about earlier, I am sure that he didn't mean any of it. It's this damn disease that puts these Pals under a lot of stress. I remember when my late son would always ask me if I thought his attitude was changing. You see not everyone is alike. My son was on the quiet side. He was always deep in thought, and I could tell he was on the sad side. I hate it every time I think about it. This damn illness affects a lot of people. My baby is at peace now with his Father, and I miss him so. Is Hospice coming to Jonny's home to tend him, or is he in a facility. There is a new long term care facility here in Tomball on the corner of Graham and Old School Road. Is that where he is at? I will be praying for you guys, and may God bless each one of you! Keep us posted!

Todays Events

Jonny is in Tomball Hospital still in CCU he was doing good this afternoon without his BPAP machine we went back in tonight to see him and he was no responsive and was not breathing to good they had him on a regular oxygen mask and they put him back on his machine he was doing better when we left will know more tommrow will keep everyone posted. We are waiting on a private room so hospic can take completely over hopefully we will have that tommrow.

Hi Vicky! Nice to hear from you. Is Jonny going to be hospitalized there, and then get sent home, or what? Sorry for the questions! Does Tomball Regional have a Hospice wing? Vicky, do you'll live in town or out in the country? Take care, oh yeah how is your baby?

They dont have a hospic wing its just they contract out of Tomball Hospital and at the rate of his decline he will not be moved out of the hospital I beleive we are in the last few stages of life if by what I am reading is right. And I live on the outskirts of Tomball. All they are doing now is giving him meds and keeping him comfortable.

Well Vickie, I hardly know what to say. Given how difficult Jonny was, you have coped with this situation in the most compassionate way possible and you've managed to do right by everybody involved.

Thank you, Vickie for the info. I will be praying for you and your family. I am sure He is calling Jonny home. Just think he won't be suffering anymore. Keep us posted Vickie, and God bless!

dear Vickie,

I pray for you and your daughter as well as your husband. Y'all take care.
Hi Vickie- Don't forget to take care of yourself during this emotional time. Give that adorable little girl of your an extra hug from your friends on the forum. Cindy
