Small, early ropinirole trial

Thanks for posting this! I have a question (if you don't know the answer I'm happy to look more into it and report back here later):

The article states "the ropinirole group showed significant suppression of ALSFRS-R decline and an additional 27.9 weeks of disease-progression-free survival."

Does that mean, if the participants were to take ropinirole throughout their entire progression that they would expect to live (trach-free) an extra 27.9 weeks?

On average. But these results likely would not be as glossy in a bigger trial. Half a year of stability would be awesome, but once again...small study, unreliable summary stats.

Yeah I bet. What stood out to me in the treatment vs placebo group was the BMI difference. The placebo group having a starting BMI in the 17s is really really low.

Studies like this make me really wish I still had access to CMS's virtual research data center (VRDC). It would be neat to be able look at a (medicare & medicaid) population-level statistics around people who were already taking ropinirole before their ALS diagnoses

Maybe someday if I can get ahold of $40,000 for my own license lol!

Yes, H/L BMI as a proxy for baseline resilience is important in any disease, but one that is at least in part a disease of hypermetabolism...in a larger study, that could be eliminated as a confound.

Hello
I saw an article about how Ropinirole was the top discovery in 2018 as a potential treatment for ALS. This is the first trial I have seen. In 2002 I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. That was treated with bipap. Also, I have restless leg syndrome. That is treated with. Ropinirol,.75 Total at bedtime. The pill was .25 mg so you could take it through the day. In January 2006 DX ALS.
I don't know that it helped. Or if using the bipap therapy helped more. Long-term use of RoRopiniroleI have no side effects.

I
