Slurred speech was my first issue. Family and friends noticed first.

I have had on and off throat pain all spring (started in winter with super dry throat).

Had full neuro workup. Looks fine, but post inflammatory cyst found in throat.ENT says it's nothing to worry about (but a peritonsillar abscess can cause hot potato voice). Mine is not an abscess, but the neuro Dr labeled it as post inflammatory cyst.

Had EMG, had EMG again after 3 months. Shows worsen condition, only on the right side. Is that normal for ALS to begin on just one side

I took an aspirin and anxiety meds before second appt. (not the first). Read on the web it could skew EMG results. Dr said no it wouldn't.

Been diagnosed with bulbar onset ALS. Not sure if it's true or not. My swallowing has gotten better (or I have gotten more used to it) and throat pain is gone. Slurring persists.

Also, a few months back, entire tongue went numb when I woke up in the morning, then I got pins and needles sensations and most of it came back (except the base of tongue).

I don't know if this is ALS or a peritonsillar abcess. The rest of my right side feels fine and I don't know if second EMG was accurate or not?

I do get twitching around my mouth and in my tongue. Some twitching elsewhere in body (although not necessarily just on the right side). I do get leg cramps in right side calf muscles.

ALS or not sure?

If you can post the emg ( with your name obscured) we could answer better.

was this an ALS specialist? Were they at a university level clinic? Even so we always recommend a second opinion for everyone.

there are some things you say that don’t sound typical- improvement of swallow and sensory symptoms. Of course you could also have 2 things happening.

the meds would not affect the emg as your doctor said.

sorry this must be very stressful

To also mention, I still have burning mouth syndrome. Edges of tongue and sometimes back of tongue feel bitey.
