Shoulder Subluxation

Hi All,

I was diagnosed in Oct 23 with Flail Arm Syndrome. My left shoulder is subluxated. I was managing with a sling and have bought a triangle pillow for sleeping. Recently the sling seems to leave me more in pain but a physio advised that (and pillows.)

Does anyone have any other ideas? (Exercise is not an option and it's the entire arm and hand I have no use of.)

Hi, Denise, are you using the Giv Mohr sling? A sling should not increase pain. Nor should pillows, which are sometimes placed too high or soft, which causes further instability. Wherever you are, you want to position and stabilize the entire arm and bend the arm at the elbow so that the shoulder is not being pulled on. And anyone who helps you with care should know not to pull on any part of that arm, nor on the other one that is also at high risk.

The equipment sticky lists some possible accommodations for other tasks that you may be able to do with your R arm -- not sure of its status.

In addition, having someone gently "reconstitute the shoulder joint" with their hands where the shoulder blade is in your back, massaging/moving it toward the spine, may help. The physio should know how to instruct in this.

In addition, your exercise supporter can support your entire arm and do passive range of motion where they bend your lower arm back and forth at the elbow while supporting the shoulder and upper arm.

Hi Laurie,

Thankyou, I couldn't find that sling available (don't know if that's due to being in the UK)I was using one that was for rotator cuff injuries and dislocations. It used to be fine but over the past 6 months or so it's been increasingly painful.

My GP said my posture is twisted, he didn't find any clinical weakness in my right arm,but he said he thought my right shoulder abduction was weak due to the posture. I havent changed the lengths or anything on my current slings.

Thankyou for your advice on the equipment sticky, I will have a look. I've bought a new sling today that fixes around the abdomen then fixes onto the upper arm and straps the arm level across the chest. So I'll see how I get on!
