I spend 23 hours in my recliner most days. I'm 5'9" and 150lbs. I've been pretty comfortable with this set up for years. Lately I was suffering a good deal of pain on my tailbone area. After much trial and error, I am back to being comfortable again. I ended up using a $33 cushion from Amazon. I was really surprised at the improved comfort. If you are suffering similar issues it might help. It's thin enough that it doesn't significantly alter the seating position in the recliner.
Search Amazon for:

Dr. Air Seat Cushion, Pain Relief for Back/Tailbone/Sciatica/Coccyx

Thanks for posting this information, Jimi. I have an abundance of built-in padding, but someone else in my household is experiencing these problems. Sounds like this cushion may help!

Thank you for posting this. No matter what I do, I cannot find something that is comfortable for my husband. Will this work in a wheelchair, too?

I'm not sure. I use it on the recliner because it is thin and has a gap for the tailbone. For a wheelchair I have had good luck with a Roho air cushion.
