I just learned that Dick died in July. A former Marine, he became very active in ALS advocacy and we worked on some projects together. He fought for better VA care, spearheaded additional research funding, and helped PALS obtain wheelchair vans. RIP.
 
Impressive individual. Once in Atlanta for a study, Thiede was reaching into his bag to help a guy, when the guy grabbed Thiede's wallet and ran. The Marine took it in stride and said he wanted to focus on the positive--the work he was doing for vets and PALS.
 
Yeah, he ended up moving to ATL to be with family, and that's how he became aware of the differences between VAs.
 
yes, there is a big, big difference between VAs!! too bad.
