Hello to everyone there fighting dificult times. I Am a 46 year old woman from Spain Who has some symptoms and has some doubts about if these could be of ALS.

I Will try to tell you my story short so as not to bother you with boring details. In September 2017 I started having pain and problems with my neck on my left side with dizziness and vértigo. Went for a MRI and everything was fine. Aches and contractured muscle went on to shoulder and ultímately this summer I experienced weakness in hand. However, I still can do everything normal but feel I have lees strength in it.

In between I was diagnosed with helicobacter pyloris, a stomach bug, and had to take Lots of antibiótics to finish with it. Helicobacter also produced anemia and I had pins and needles both in hands and legs, weakness in my left leg and twitches all o ver. I then visited neurologist Who didnt examine me but ordered EMG and ENG and brain MRI. He attributed pins and Needle feelings to anemia.

The nerve conduction study was done all o ver my leg ( Front and Back) and left arm and hand. EMG, however, was done Just on the front of the leg: foot, shin and thigh. . In the arm it was done on biceps, tríceps and deltoid muscle. Everything was fine and EMG and brain MRI were clean. Neurologist looked at results and sent me to psychiatrist and traumatologist for my leg. Said he saw nothing neurologic as per the tests.

But as of 3 weeks or so I have been feeling vibrations at the Back of my legs together with dome twitches. My leg Hurts when I walk and traumatologist said she could see one of my calves was discreetly thinner than the other but said it was not important.

So now I Wonder if EMG on the front of my leg was enough to outrule ALS or if I should go through the test again. Could you help me with this?

Thanks so much in advance for letting me express my worries here.

Hi Marta,

I don't think ALS is your problem, as you have not described it. I am assuming the anemia has been corrected? And that you no longer have vertigo?

However, since you report pain while walking, perhaps an orthopedist or rehabilitation specialist or physio might be your next stop.

Best,
Laurie

Hi Laurie
Thanks for your Quick response.
I still don't know if anemia has been correctos since I Am
wating for results. Vértigo is no longer with me although my neck is still not ok and have problems with it. For tjat I go to physio therapy.
The thing is that I was not at first worried about ALS biut then with my weak leg, weak hand and the doctor saying something about discreet hipotrophy, all the Red lights and alarms went on in my head and thought about ALS. I read about it in this forum and as you always say clean emg, no ALS, I was a little relieved. Then it came to my mind that the emg was done obly on the front of my leg and then all my doubts came Back again and Wonder es if that emg was enough or not.
For the record I must say that my hand and leg feel weak but I havent fallen down or dropped anything....yet. So it is a mild weakness, I guess.
Thanks again for trying to help me out.
Marta

The hallmark of ALS is certain abnormal EMG findings even in areas where you don't think you have a problem. So it is not an issue that only one front of one leg was done.

Thank you, Laurie. That is what I wanted to confirm and here in Spain doctors are kind of unreachable once you have left their practice. It is a relief to hear that. I Will keep postíng as to let you know what it is that I have in my leg so that this can help others. Thanks so much for your help again and God bless you all for having this forum. I keep you in my prayers.
Muchas gracias de corazón.
Marta.
