Jhettinger and Wilson, thank you for this post. I didn’t know about this and found out I’m eligible. Because my PALS was in military prior to 9/11, I cannot apply until after October 1. I can wait!!

Thanks, that is what this VA Forum is for.

Hello All, My wife applied October 1. We got a phone call today from VA to schedule a telephone call assessment of both me as pALS and her as caregiver. They said a 2 hour call! Have any of ya’ll been through this? It would be great to get information on what to expect.

Thank you, Tom

We just did this, wasn't hard and since my husband is now total care some of the questions didn't really apply. Ours took about an hour but she did say it went faster because of his care level.

Jhettinger and Frankb....

"Thanks, that is what this VA Forum is for."

I get the hint.

It's a Forum for all topics concerning Veteran matters,
politics (which is a big part of Veteran Affairs) and or
general conversation and comments.

You have felt free to comment (hint/like)... and so will I.

"Someone please explain..."

I am up on Veteran Affairs.... I didn't have to ask a Forum
to be aware/question this. It's on the VA web site.

(If your spouse is a Veteran diagnosed with ALS or any
other disability and for some reason he/she is aloof to
their service benefits (?)....all you have to do is call the
PVA, DAV, or others and they will be eager to help you.
You can even call the VA!
Call them first before you seek help or direction from
a forum.)

Welcome Home Brothers... if you are Vietnam Vets.

If not... thank you for your service.

Debwilson77, thanks very much for your post. I will provide feedback after our assessment next Tuesday

al. wish i was as up to date on va benefits as you. the first news concerning pcafc was on the forum (where i have had other great va benefits information from you and a multitude of others). thank heavens for the forum.

received my first va call three days ago in response to my application for pcafc. the atlanta med center appears to be anxious to get eligible vets enrolled because of tight va deadlines. waiting to receive second call. let's see what happens.

I am not eligible ... cold war veteran geez

received my second call from the va today (on sunday, can you believe it !). scheduled a 2 hr interview for monday.. let's see wat happens!

Jhettinger, I've got some things going on here at the house but
give me some time to really glean over this final document.

In the quick chance I've had to skim read it (something I have
criticized others for) this jumped out at me

"Under the final rule, a Veteran (to include a qualifying service members)
must have a service-connected disability rating by VA of 70% or more
to qualify for the program."

Being you have been diagnosed with ALS and the VA recognizes
ALS I'd think that would make you 100%. There might be an "end
around here"

I'll try to be helpful... no promises. I've lost some of the comprehensive
reading skills I used to have. Years ago I read messages for meaning
content.

Mike, (Atsugi) hope you check in. He used to work for VA.

My wife and I just completed the first step in the program, which is a lengthy telephone assessment of my need and her
willingness and capability it was straightforward questions regarding my need of a caregiver and her experience and capabilities. Of course with the standard questions about depression and suicide.

Next step is a physical assessment of how afflicted I am and the need for a caregiver. After that the next step is online training for my wife. VA did advise the law change caused increased the steps to be approved but it all must be done within 90 days. Hope this helps pALS and cALS.

Cheers
Tom.
