Power wheelchair and restaurants

If the entrance is the main issue and you see or envision other exterior doors, ask about a back or side entrance that may not be usually open to the public. There may be a loading dock, kitchen entrance, etc. that is wider for bringing in supplies. Sometimes you can even go into an elevator elsewhere in the building and come back in.

To add to what Laurie just said - we called a small brew pub one time to to inquire about accessibility. They told us to come in to the bar and the bartender would help us out. He came out from behind the bar, went to the basement and brought out a ramp so DH could get through the entrance in his PWC. He then made sure we had a table and told us to just come see him when we were ready to leave. He then ran back, got the ramp, and escorted us out. They were more than accommodating! Don't be afraid to call ahead.

Does anyone else have the problem that even when they are able to get legs under the table in PWC, and be parked as close in as possible, the plate on table is still too far away to reach without leaning whole body forward, which is too physically difficult/exhausting? Due to difficulty holding utensils, and difficulty chewing food, I need to be leaned over my plate or else there will be a mess down my shirt and in my lap. I also need to tilt slightly back when in wheelchair for best support. The result is that no matter how close I am to table in a restaurant I still end up needing either the plate in my lap, or my husband to feed me bites (we usually do the latter, even though it's a little embarassing).

Kristina, from what you describe, it sounds like a wheelchair tray table would work. I have those for 2 of my Permobil wheelchairs.

They are very adjustable and I think could be positioned to accommodate your need.

Steve, thanks that sounds perfect. Where can I buy one?

For Permobil wheelchairs, Permobil makes the table. You will need mounting hardware appropriate for your wheelchair as well.

I received my first one with my first wheelchair, which was procured through NuMotion. My second one came along with a used Permobil wheelchair I bought.

I see them listed on ebay as well. Search for "Permobil Tray Table". There are quite a few listed on ebay now. I have bought other items from one of the vendors currently offering tray tables. The vendor I have used charges more, but has always provided excellent service. If you want details, let me know and I will provide them via a private message.

Thanks Steve, I got my chair through NuMotion as well. Would you recommend I ask my guy there about a tray table first in case they have one they can install for me?

I would certainly start with NuMotion. It will be the easiest way to do it, though may cost more than buying used.

My first wheelchair, which was purchased using private insurance came with a tray table. Insurance paid for the Permobil tray table (except for deductibles and out of pocket stuff). I think it was justified as being used to hold a keyboard for speech to text, among other things.
