Hello,

I have questions in regards to possible ALS. I have been having weakness in and tightness in my hands for almost 8 months. My neurologist ordered an EMG/NCS. He stated that he thinks I have a pinched nerve. I have tightness and pain in my arms, shoulders, chest. And sometimes my legs feel heavy to move. The pain and stiffness usually gets worse at night. My hands are affected bilaterally and can be hard to open and close at times. I feel as though my grip strength is getting worse. My twitching was pretty widespread but has gotten better. My physical exam in May was normal. I had a repeat EMG because my symptoms haven’t gotten better. I was wondering if any of you can look at the EMG pictures that I have attached and tell me what you think. In the results it states something about poly but I’m not sure what that means. Thanks so much for listening.

Your EMG is textbook normal. The pictures represent nerve conduction which is separate from the EMG.

You do not have ALS.

Hi. I took another look at your EMG. The format is a little hard to read. You do have some polyphasic waves in a few areas, but that is not an ALS pattern. The EMG does not suggest ALS .

Ok. That was my concern, the portion that said poly and incr. I’m not really sure what that means. At the bottom where the doctor reads the report she stated “There is no electrophysiologic evidence for a diffuse large fiber neuropathy, myopathy or neuromuscular junction transmission defect.” But she did not mention a motor neuron disorder. If something was abnormal in the report they would have stated it there in the conclusion portion? They were thinking I may have myasthenia Gravis. I may be overthinking but my symptoms have been scaring me with the twitching, stiff muscles, pain, and muscle weakness for about 8 months now. Thank you for your time!
