Paty, God bless you and your family. Keep us posted. I will be praying for Jorge and his family. I am attending a special mass for the dead tonight. I have never been to one before, so it is going to be quite an experience. My life has changed so since my son passed. I took a big turn in life, his passing really changed me. I will pray for this forum tonight. First I am going to the cemetery, and I am going to tell my son that I have a new family (you guys). He'll be so happy for me I know! God bless all!

THat is a big step, Irma-adopting a new "family." Your son will be proud to know you are turning your grief into something positive. Hugs, Cindy

I also wonder

I just stumbled onto this thread today. My husband has been referred to and is seeing neurology specialists at the University of Kansas Medical Center the day after tomorrow. He has been very careless with pesticides, and his profession was firefighter in a major city, so was exposed to chemicals and many toxins.

He is 61 yrs old and has many symptoms consistent with MND. We are quite concerned.

I'll try to find my way back to this site when we return later this week and post our findings.

I wonder if not knowing is worse than knowing. This has me stressed to the max!

Hi teaguec

Hi teaguec:

You couldn't be in a better place, save the site in your Favorites, so you can find your way back.

Welcome to this Little House on the Prairie, you'll make friends and can vent all your feelings and ask questions to Pals and Cals.

Sincerely,

Paty

Good news

My husband had MRI's in Tulsa to rule out the possibility of pinched nerves, etc. We were told that there was some damage to his neck, but not enough to cause symptoms in his arm.

The doctor in KC seems to think that it is significant, and is probably causing much of his problem. They think he has a genetic neuropathy that is effecting his legs as well.

Anyway, we were instructed to have him retested from time to time and to monitor his symptoms, but they do not believe he has ALS! Nortriptolyn was prescribed, but hasn't given the desired relief as yet. He hasn't built up to the maximum prescribed dose yet, and we are hopeful that once that happens his symptoms will greatly improve.

Needless to say, we were very (cautiously) excited about the news.

Thank you so much for your encouragement and help. I'll still be watching this thread and praying for many who have not gotten this encouraging news.

Last year one of our friends died due to ALS... he was a police officer and a sportsman, always running throught the fields.

At the funeral I was really shocked to hear his supervisor memorate him as someone who never stepped back. As an example he remembered that our friend once was hunting an offender through a field where a plane was spraying pesticides at that same moment. He came out of the field completely coloured.
Everyone smiled to hear this anecdote, but I was astonished to hear this story...pesticides again in combination with ALS.

So many bikers, runners, and other sportsmen and -women that do outdoor sports become PALS. Are they all victims of the pesticides that are used on our food?

Regards,

Diana

ALS and pesticides

Paty,

My husband has ALS and I have been researching possible causes for some time. I have found documentation that Gulf War veterans developed ALS at roughly twice the national average and it is suspected that pesticides are largely responsible for this. The U.S. government has acknowledged this and it is my understanding that Gulf War veterans are being compensated for ALS as well as the other illnesses related to Gulf War Syndrome. Another factor in the Gulf War was the exposure to Red Fuming Nitric Acid from the missiles exploding overhead. This is also suspected to have caused ALS as well as other Gulf War illnesses. My husband is not a Gulf War veteran but he and I were exposed to Red Fuming Nitric Acid in 1985 when a missile exploded overhead while we were living near an airforce base. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2005. I can't help but think that this is related.
