I just recently went to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville FL. I'm so confused. I saw a specialist for nerve disorders. My ncv and emg seemed to show something which he relayed to me was not "benign" He took 6 viles of blood from me to check for cancer and antibodies, etc. He didn't want to give me a definate diagnoses until my blood work comes back in two weeks. (Went last Tue and Wed) So after the EMG/NCV he tells me he is leaning toward Periphal Nerve Exitability sp? I have no idea what this means. He also said he felt my problems were in the nerve and not the muscle. Does that mean it's not ALS for sure? I'm so confused. Somebody please help.

Hi Michellele,
It sounds like some kind of impingement of the nerves or a peripheral neuropathy. And with the blood work perhaps he is looking for antibodies that would indicate some form of CIDP. Sounds mucho better than a query of ALS. Good luck.

Thank you I'm so confused. Do you know if ALS is in the muscle or the nerves?

Hi Michellele,
We all get confused with the complexities of these diseases. ALS causes degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. If you can get the results of your EMG and nerve conduction tests, we can send them on to Wright who is on in- house interpreter of all things complicated. Your neuro. should be willing to give you copies of those reports.
