Kay, you’ve been an inspiration to me all along. A gait belt to assist in transferring is a great idea. Thanks for the tip.

The next thing on my plate is getting a g-tube. I’m pretty certain it’s going to happen within the next few months. I know one has to wait 6 weeks after g-tube placement before resuming swimming. I wonder how my body will be after 6 weeks of not swimming, in terms of transferring, etc. I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.

Left arm nearly useless and right arm nearing that point. We moved to my daughter’s in Illinois and sold our Indiana house in 2 days. At first we thought we would purchase an accessible house near my daughter, but my progression is fast-I was diagnosed in September last year. Can no longer stand. And, today my wife was pulled down by my daughter’s dog and broke her collarbone. I am due something good so maybe I should enter the lottery. My wife was going to be trained on the hoyer lift on Friday so I can get out of this wheelchair, but now what? Guess I will have Home Healthcare come in a couple more days each week.

Oh no! Are you living with your daughter?

Kay, You rock this forum. You are the person who helped me most in my PWC purchase in getting the accessories I would need.

dldugan, I'm so sorry about your wife but it is good that the house sold so quickly. I hope she heals fast and I do hope, once things are settled, that you can make some good memories with your daughter.

Karen, are you swimming in an indoor or outdoor pool? I just assumed it was an indoor pool because of your location.

I was thinking getting my eyes "done" whatever that turns out to be would interfere with my swimming....or whatever you call floating in the pool with a device designed for a toddler.

I would like to know how everyone gets their hair cut. I had many years with very long hair, then a few with shoulder length, then a shorter bob, now it's pretty much a stylish man cut. I'm thinking of going even shorter and just having spikes on the top. The problem is my hair grows so darn fast I need a plan in action to find someone who will do it this way and come to the house.

My friend who was trading haircuts for something I had dumped me over my being a liberal. I have another very conservative friend who might do it but she thinks I should go back to my ex-husband and support him for another 10 years.

Wow. I was at the dentist today followed by an ALS support group, so I just got back and found all these posts.

Kim— I go to an indoor pool. Getting your eyes done should not interfere with swimming if you keep your head above water. Haircuts— so far I go to a salon. I was able to transfer to the hair washing chair, and she cut my hair as I sat in my pwc. Put an extra drape over the pwc to keep the hair bits away. Seems to work ok so far.
You can always do a buzz cut and a mohawk, or let your hair grow into dreads like Chally used to do. Damn I miss him.

Kay — good luck with the new mic-key. Sounds like good eating awaits.

Dugan — you are definitely due something good. I wish your wife a speedy recovery and lots of assistance for you. Glad the milk of mag got things moving again. The basic comforts are so important. Glad your IN house sold so fast. At least you no longer have that hanging over you.

So I went to this support group meeting today. We had the head SLP for Oregon ALS chapter there speaking about assistive technology for speech. It was good. I learned a few things. There were 8 PALS there. That’s the most I’ve seen in one place. It was both sad and exciting at the same time. One guy looked like a Druid with his carved walking staff and long white beard. And he had the coolest speech generating device.

Karen, given you live in Oregon, chances are he IS a druid or some other neo-pagan type!

Kim, so sorry your hair upkeep has been a trial due to your unreasonable ( ;) ) liberal ideals. Karen, good advice with regards to a mohawk/fauxhawk. Very cool- I am partial to adventurous cuts and encourage anyone to go wild.

When my arm strength and endurance (and patience) started to go, I got the sides and back of my head shaved and left the top long- which is similar to my younger and much more stylish youth and I am enjoying it very much. The removal of much of the bulk of my hair has prolonged my ability to care for it. I do leave it pulled back or put up in a bun much of the time, which cuts down on the need to detangle it or wash it every day. I get it trimmed/tidied every 3 to 4 weeks at a salon, but know of several people who will come to my home should I start finding it too difficult to go out. My husband could even do it with our hair clippers with a little convincing- as he used to do when we were young punk(ish) rebels who were too poor to spend money on frivolities.

Dugan, I am so sorry your wife was hurt. I am sure that's quite a tale to tell and I hope everyone is ok and there are no long lasting issues.

Last weekend I re-pierced my ears by just pushing the earrings through. A little blood but I really wanted to wear earrings. Problem is I have two holes in each ear and was pushing them through the holes that had healed for quite a few years.

I might put an ad in the paper WANTED: Someone to cut a Democratic Socialist's hair in her home in trade for weed.

It's the hair on top that is driving me crazy. My hair is super thick so I have to keep it layered. It also turned from dark blonde to dishwater blonde/brown with gray in front. I look like a skunk. Shaving it might be the best solution. I have a hijab from when I went to a Mosque with a friend or I could just wear a ball cap, turned backward to be cool.

Good night my friends.

My ears were almost as healed as yours Kim. They didn’t bleed though. I have had to do it a couple of times in the last couple of years because I stop wearing them again. I should go put on earrings now. Thanks for the reminder!

There must be liberal hair dressers somewhere or at least tolerant ones. I had to bite my tongue with my former one but she was the person with the scissors. I honestly don’t know the politics of the current one. Oddly they both are dealing with genetic diseases too. The old one in herself, the current has children at risk from their dad.

Hope everyone has a great day

As a mostly bald man I don't have many issues with managing the remaining hair on my head, but I like to keep my beard trimmed (mostly the result of my swimming days, when a long beard got in the way of breathing--now it's for the Trilogy mask and to help with my sloppy eating). I found my barber could trim both hair and beard with me in my PWC---he just pushed the regular chair out of the way--all these years I assumed it was bolted to the floor.

It's distressing to read that our political differences are leading to the behaviors described above.

Oh no! Are you living with your daughter?

Yes, but her and her husband work. I have a son that is retired in Dallas and I am thinking about asking him to come and stay with us awhile.

That would be great. I hope your son can stay and help get things in order.

It seems like everything is rushed when ALS is in the picture.

I floated in the pool today for about 30 minutes. Gave my legs and arms a good "workout" for ROM. The water temperature was 88. Friday we're getting a "cold" front which will probably mean me being out of the pool for several days.

Vincent, some of us ARE the left leaning daughters who cut hair (in my case, never skillfully). I have a left leaning "almost" daughter-in-law who does hair though. I would never let my own kid near my hair with scissors, but I do trust their girlfriend.

Kim, your cold fronts are likely warmer than a balmy spring or summer day where some of us are from!
