I saw this article in the Times today and thought it might be of interest to some here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/01/science/01muscle.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slogin

Although the drug would not directly address the effects of ALS related motor neuron damage, it may one day help improve quality of life, by increasing endurance in existing muscle (as you read, you will see that the caveat of current animal studies is that in order to receive the increased endurance benefits, the PPAR-delta protein must be raised in conjunction with excercise).

Based on the article, one of the lead researcher's, Dr. Ronald Evans, has a pretty solid set of credentials. Even if the side effects are deemed to be to great for general use, there may be sufficient benefit to use them in the neuromuscular disease setting.

I guess its a sign of the wonderful world we live in that one of the first concerns is to make sure the drug makes it on the ban list of the World Anti-Doping Agency :-D

Robert

PS A quick Google search of AICAR and ALS shows that other people are thinking the same thing.

Thanks for the information.
