Hello,

Hello, my name is Elvis I’m 29 years old. For a few weeks now I’ve been experiencing twitching in my right arm. Mostly in my bicep. I’ve read many times on here that widespread twitching usually doesn’t mean anything but i wanted to ask if that is the usually the case when twitching is mostly in one arm? Extremely grateful for any help and guidance.

Thanks

Hi there-

Please make sure to read this:

Read Before Posting

It covers twitching- which is so common as to mean anything from nothing at all to a whole variety of other issues. Just like coughing, a thing that can mean anything from throat irritation to a virus, etc, etc. ALS/MND is indicated by a specific group of symptoms, which you do not report. The link above also recommends you start with a clinical exam by a medical practitioner if you have concerns about your health.

Take care

I would suggest you see your doctor and look at your diet, exercise, hydration and sleep.
Twitching alone means nothing so far as ALS, but your first stop should always be your doctor not the internet

Thank you for replying. I try not to but I can’t help but worry about twitching for no apparent reason in the same place on my body. I’ve read multiple stories of this being the initial symptom before weakness occurs so I guess that’s what I worry about the most. I have a doctors appointment scheduled for Tuesday. Thanks for replying.

It will be at least as important to admit to your doctor that you are trawling google and an ALS forum, as to ask about your twitching. You can read stories online that support any theory or fear. But we won't go down that rabbit hole of misinformation with you.
You could also argue that because people with brain tumours have headaches, you must have a brain tumour if you get more than one headache. It just ain't so.
Let us know after your doctor appointment, but until then how you spend your time and emotional energy is in your control.

Get Real
We've had so many threads about twitching the past year or more and it could possibly be with the new
rave of energy drinks, the big fad now. Endless TV commercials. Many doctors now are beginning to
relate them to side effects... anxiety, twitching, headaches and more. And then... the growing side
effects of vaping (coughing, shortness of breath, head aches) and in combination with the energy drink fad.

And.... the countless TV ads for supplements which some many have side effects too if taking too many
or in combination. (And Viagra) There's a lot to twitching far far beyond ALS.

Possibly not for you but for others who many read this. But... many who do may not admit to it in their
threads.

PS. Late addition... countless TV ads for male enhancement supplements ("She'll like it too") What's really
crazy is some women are taking them too. Hey guys, who do take them... there's no accredited proof
they work. It's really all in your head. The only ones who really benefit from them is... the football, baseball,
and basketball stars who are paid $,$$$,$$$ to do the commercials. :)

What Al states is a huge reason why all we can really say is, "doesn't sound like ALS, see a doctor".
How can we say anything really, in response to some unreliable text description of symptoms that may not include most of the important information a doctor would easily gather while doing a clinical examination.

Seen a doctor yesterday. She didn’t seem to really take seriously what I was telling her about the twitching I’ve got going on. So I asked her to refer me to a neurologist. They’re not able to see me until February. The twitching in my arm is still pretty constant. The only time it stops is when I’m driving for some reason or if I keep myself moving with like work or exercise. Also been having some occasional pain in my back kind of down my spine area. Not sure if it’s related. Thinking about going to see a different doctor. Is there any specific questions I could ask or test I could have them do on me get more out of the visit?

Twitching means nothing without clinical weakness. The doctor was taking you seriously, you just don't understand what ALS is.
You shouldn't ask doctors to do tests you want. You present yourself for examination, describe your symptoms, then ask the doctor what they think.
I hope you can let go of your fears enough to work with your doctors and find a way back to full health.

Hello,

I seen a physical therapist yesterday. Performed all the strength test and everything was good. The one thing that concerns me is that when they tried to test the reflexes in my arm they were absent. Two therapist checked the reflexes in both my arms right below the bicep and I had no reflexes. He also said the muscle in my left bicep was slightly lower than my right but he couldn’t see any atrophy when looking. Can some members please share their thoughts about this? Thank you

ALS has asymmetrical hyperreflexia so not to worry. If you were focused on the fact they were testing you that could affect you too how were your reflexes at the neurologist?
if you mean the bicep is smaller on the left asymmetry is normal.

I wasn’t sure what he meant when he said my left bicep was lower. Wish I had asked more questions but I can never think of anything until after I leave. Wasn’t able to get an appointment with a neurologist until February. Just praying for no more symptoms and trying to keep my mind at ease until then. Thank your for responding.

Nothing of concern at all came up in that examination. You can ask your doctor for help to keep your mind at ease as you are making this into something far bigger than doctors or any of us here would agree with.
Make the most of the next weeks, we all had to wait for appointments. Only you can control now how well you spend that time.

Hello,

I wanted to ask about something I’ve noticed since the twitching in my right arm has been going on is that it seems to go away when I consume alcohol. It stops for about 3 days then it slowly comes back. Can some members please share their thoughts about this?

Thank you
