but would anyone care to put the article into layman's terms as to what this could mean for the treatment of ALS?

One of the suspected mechanisms of ALS is misfolded proteins. If they can use that information to figure out the rules under which chemicals combine to form proteins then perhaps they can ensure they form correctly or at a minimum get more information on a cause/treatment.
