Hi, I just joined the forums today as it's been an overwhelming week.
My Mom was diagnosed w/Bulbar onset ALS just before Christmas. We've had our 3rd appt. at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, CT with an awesome doctor and team. We are all just astounded at the quick deterioration of my Mom. We noticed her slurring her words in Oct. 2012 and now she is barely speaking. She goes for a swallow test next week along with 2 appts. for the Text to Speech tools available. Her energy level/stamina has deteriorated incredibly fast. She received her BiPap machine this past week as she has the headaches from the weakening respiratory muscles. She will be 78 in a couple weeks and it's just so heartbreaking to see her go from a vibrant, active woman to how she is now. I don't know what each day will bring at this point and I have to admit it's all been very overwhelming. It's hard to wrap your head around such a huge adjustment in lifestyle for her. This is such a dreadful disease and to have it seemingly strike out of the blue is just such a shock. I've read some other listings, and feel for everyone dealing with this. I hope to continue to gain knowledge, and strength, from all who are on here.
