Get Real
Veterans… concerning your military records and medical records.

A Viet Nam Veteran, from my unit, from a small mid western was awarded
the Silver Star. Every Memorial Day and Veterans Day this small town
would give him recognition. He, like many Viet Nam Veterans passed
away way before his time as compared to WWII and Korean Veterans.

After his passing the small town continued to recognize him on those
Holidays. Well, one guy took a grudge to this and paid his $9.95 or $19.95
to one of these web sites that say you can get anyone’s military records.

The information he got back was that this Viet Nam Veteran was a
mechanic in a motor pool at a base camp, unlikely to be a field soldier
out in the “boonies” as we called it. This guy with a grudge spread this
information around town and of course many jumped on it. His valor
was being questioned by many.

Ok, here is the place to implant this in this story…

*OFMPs, separation documents (DD214), replacement records, and medical records are
not open to the public and must go through a verification process to obtain these items.

*Others requesting information from military personnel/health records must have the signed
authorization of the service member or legal guardian. If you're using a private DD214 research
service to acquire your DD214, they must have your written permission to do so.

*Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF) permanent records of the United States. This schedule
mandates the legal transfer of these files from DOD ownership to NARA ownership 62 years after
the service member's separation from the military.

Fortunately his son got wind of this and was able to obtain his fathers factual
records. (Because he had the required information.) He was NOT a mechanic in
base camp motor pool. He was with a Forward Observational Team that came under heavy ambush
and he bravely saved many lives.

Anyway, these web sites that advertise you can get military, criminal, divorce
or background records on a person with just their name and address are scams.
Pay your $9.95 or $12.95 giving your credit card info to who knows who...
in Bufacee India, Ukraine or Bangkok and start an unverified, possibly false rumor about
someone tarnishing their reputation.

Mods… if this is in the wrong sub-forum feel free to move it.

I'm sorry a valorous vet's name was unjustly tarnished. No doubt, there are a lot of scam sites out there.

Best,
Laurie

Good to know, Al. Thanks.
