What's your take on liver flushing? (A.k.a liver cleanse)

Some swear by it, others say it's nothing but a fad and that it doesn't (and cannot) do anything to improve liver function. As with any topic, there is a lot of debate on the web where proponents from both sides argue.

In case you are not familiar with it, the flush/cleanse involves understimulating the gallbladder by not eating fat/protein for a few days, then drink epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) to relax and open ducts in the gallbladder - then consume a hefty amount of olive oil at once - overstimulating the gallbladder to release its contents (pushing out gallstones lodged in the gallbladder and liver)

I thought I'd bring this up since I read another forum discussion about undetected liver disease in ALS patients and how it could compromise absorption of nutrients, among other things, causing a chain of problems that can trigger ALS.

Have anyone in here tried it, and to what result?
