My dad was diagnosed with ALS a year ago, he has respiratory onset.
Although he uses a NIPPV up to 20 hours a day and needs a motorised wheelchair for anything longer than a few steps he's actually doing ok considering the prognosis last year, a year later he still can eat and drink what he likes he can still speak clearly and although he is weak he enjoys going out for a spin in his wheelchair and socialising with friends and family.

Ever since i can remember my Dad has always tapped his hands a couple of times on objects like a table or arms of a chair or inexplicably pick up and set down objects a few times just a little habit he had it wasn't very noticeable only to those close to him and i dont think he was ever aware of it.
I have noticed that this little habit has become more frequent recently (possibly with the anxiety of the illness) and im wondering if there is any link? has anyone else noticed this with their PA LS

OCD not unlike that demonstrated by TV's "Monk" character.

No.

But I've always been compelled to be very ordered and efficient.

And speaking of which -> Edit:

If you want to be 'ordered and efficient' about it, set up a poll!

As you say, it's a habit and habits can be magnified as comfort blankets in serious illness. I would not worry that it presages anything in particular.

Sounds like generally your dad is doing well overall so keep up whatever you are doing for him!

Best,
Laurie

It has been suggested by a psychiatrist that I have a mild case of OCD. However, like Greg, I'm extremely ordered and efficient. I do get anxious when the condo isn't clean (beach sand.) I have one other OCD-like habit. I count things. Things like going down stairs. I count them. When I'm showering I find myself counting when scrubbing my hair. I asked my niece and she said she had to break herself from counting stairs. She was worse. If she messed up the count, she would go back up and start again. She was able to stop it. She is 56 and never had a health issue, other than an occasional cold, in her life. My mother's side of the family are all very organized and extremely clean. My 81-year old brother still arranges the cans in the cupboard with the labels facing out and lined up. Every time I go to his condo it looks like a maid just left. He does it.
