The last Viet Nam Veterans celebration held the Charlotte
Motor Speed Way… I and a few others almost felt out of place.
I have no pony tail, long beard, earring, tattoos, vest with
pins all over it or jungle fatigues and jungle boots. I don’t
remember what I did with the fatigues and boots.
I do have a mustache like I did in Viet Nam, there I had
a handle bar mustache. The field unit I was in was not
spit and polish and short military haircuts.
Coming back to the states and reporting to my new unit
after being home for 30 days with somewhat long hair
and my handle bar mustache I handed my orders to the
Company CO (Commanding Officer). He looked at my
orders then looked up at me. He stared for a moment and
said, “What in hell Army have you been in? I said, “1st
Field Forces 6th/ 14th Artillery sir.” He said, “Well you
are going to join the real Army… my Army. Go get a
haircut, you can keep the mustache but the handles go!”
I could tell by his uniform he served in Europe and not
been to Viet Nam yet. Never saw combat.
Fortunately the company 1st Sergeant was a Viet Nam
Combat Veteran. Later the Company CO told me he
has requested for duty in Viet Nam. Wonder where
that come from ?
Anyway, just another veterans story for this month.
Any other veteran have a story?
